Girard Street Playground

At the center is a large green space ringed with children’s play areas. Playground entrances are located at inviting mini plazas with “Culture Gates” connected by a wall shaded by colorful trees. A park building and stage are placed to provide visual connection between the neighborhood and playgrounds and separate the basketball courts from the green space. A promenade links the playground with the community center in the northwest corner.

Sustainable landscaping and neighborhood sweat equity programs are key features of the master plan. The design team facilitated the community design process and coordinated with the White House Council on Environmental Quality to obtain funding from the US Forest Service and the National Endowment for the Arts.
