DC Homeland Security Headquarters

Wellness is a significant theme in the new headquarters for Washington DC’s Homeland Security agency. Design decisions are centered on providing support for agency team members as they fulfill their mission to protect all 657,185 resident of the nation’s capital.

Work included programming and design of high security emergency operations center with SCIF rooms, a mayoral suite, and press room. Coordination was provided across multiple agencies including US Dept of Homeland Security, FEMA, DC FEMS, DC MPD, and the Office of the Mayor of the District. Infrastructure planning was instrumental to provide secure and redundant tele/data/power, including generator backup, R56 grounding, and xray/electromagnetic security system. The design included careful analysis of security and access control requirements as well as multiple approvals from DCRA.

The interior design provided efficient and timeless forms surrounded by nature’s colors, textures and natural restorative cues that provide an interior environment supportive of workplace wellness. The design was inspired from Washington DC’s unique geometries, the Potomac River’s natural presence and dynamic environment. The project is targeting LEED-CI silver.

Operations required a large audio-visual and IT scope, along with upgrades to mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and fire protection. Finishes and furnishings were designed to function at the highest level while promoting wellness in a high stress environment. Under construction currently, the project is on track to achieve LEED-CI Gold. This HQ is our studio’s third project with DC Homeland Security.
