ON THE BOARDS: The Petworth neighborhood gets an exciting new recreation and pool facility. The ISTUDIO team has designed a Net Zero Energy community center with outdoor pool, splash pad, playgrounds, and basketball court. Features include PV’s, smart stormwater management, and geothermal energy system.

Interlocking terracotta blocks of different size and transparency make space for locker rooms, meeting rooms, fitness, and a gym. Breezeblock provides a sunscreen for the west-facing main facade along Arkansas Avenue in Northwest Washington DC.

The numbers look good too:

  • 14 geothermal wells reduce energy by 74%

  • 41kW PV array reduces energy costs by 36.5%

  • 45.6% Lighting Power Density reduction

  • 85.4% total annual energy cost savings of $19,828

  • 100% stormwater managed onsite
